From the Hairpin: Calampanas, Siquijor

What used to be Sikad Siquijor was incorporated this year to the 9 day longboard expedition that is the Visayan Longboarding Trilogy.

For those outside of the Philippine longboarding community, the VLT is a 9 day event which spans three islands in the middle of the Philippine archipelago.

Aside from being the only expedition type event in Asia as of the moment, this year’s VLT was joined by the whirling dervishes themselves, Adam Colton and Adam Stokowski from Loaded.

Now we from Iloilo have been planning to join the event ever since it was conceived, but seemed to have found excuses not to. This year though was a different story. Since one of our mates will be leaving our little crew for greener pastures, (food reference since he loves to eat) we decided that it was high time for us to run out of excuses and just join the event.

For a first timer, the Siquijor course, the event, and the island itself was everything I imagined it to be. Although the island is reffered by us Filipinos as the”mystic island” when Siquijor is mentioned within the Philippine longboarding community, the thought conjured is not that of witch doctors and unworldly entities but that of winding asphalt roads and an experience that would keep you going until the next year.

Since I was not competing, all I could do was imagine how would it would have felt like racing on this yearly stop of the Philippine longboarding race circuit, and keep my composure so as not to show my envy. So to keep myself occupied and contribute to my mates which were competing, (kudos btw) and also for this little blog of ours, I took snapshots of what I witnessed at the hairpin on that memorable March day in Campalanas, Lazi, Siquijor.

To our old and new friends, cheers! Madamo guid nga salamat!
